Donate! Juan Fernandez Islands Tsunami Relief

The Juan Fernandez Islands was badly hit by the tsunami on February 27, 2010. I was planning to visit the Juan Fernandez Islands this year, but will hope to return at a later date due to the immediacy of the tragedy and the lack of infrastructure on the island. The recovery will be a long one, and any support is appreciated!

"It has now been nearly two months since the massive earthquake and subsequent tsunami struck Chile. On Robinson Crusoe Island, the coastal zone of the island’s single town was simply erased by the tsunami. Tragically, 16 people lost their life in the disaster. Given that much of the town’s infrastructure was located along the coastal fringe of the bay, the community has suffered significant losses, including to the artisanal fishery that is the driver of the local economy. Thankfully, the small seasonal fishing community out on Alejandro Selkirk Island, 180 km west of Robinson Crusoe, was not impacted. Clean-up efforts are ongoing on Robinson. To facilitate these efforts, Oikonos has hired five island residents to work full-time on cleaning up the coastal zone."
